10 photos from Sandringham (11)

Hello!

I have officially returned and would like to share with you some photographs that I took when I went to Sandringham.

We were really lucky in that the weather was great, I took the garden tour, and it was lovely to walk around the grounds for an hour an a half with the sun shining.

I don't claim to be a great photographer but if I go to a garden I get snap happy - some may remember my Devon trip where I took some pics and posted here.

Sandringham is:
Sandringham is the much-loved country retreat of Her Majesty The Queen, and has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs since 1862. The house, set in 24 hectares of stunning gardens, is perhaps the most famous stately home in Norfolk and is at the heart of the 8,000-hectare Sandringham Estate, 240 hectares of which make up the woodland and heath of the Country Park, open to the public free of charge every day of the year.

I walked around the garden, checked out the museum and visited the part of the house that was open, the house is still used by the royal family and the queen visits every summer and it is where she spends christmas, it was interesting to imagine them walking around through the same rooms that we were. But enough of that! Here are 10 pics and for those of you interested in seeing the other 140 pics  shall post a link soon to my flickr...

 1.

This amused me....can you see why? There are no toilets at Sandringham...only lavatories.

2.

This is the main house and has quite a interesting history, not least the fact that the newest part (on the right side of the wisteria) was originally built in the late 19th century as an american bowling alley after Edward VII visited the US and fell in love with the game.

3.

A pretty part of the walk that I went on, actually it was all pretty, but as I am restricted to ten photo's I shall try to give an overview.

4.

When you get to Sandringham and leave the car park and head towards the entrance there is no real big gate or anything, but this is called the North Gate and as you can see is very ornate and regal.

5.

I am posting this because when I looked at it I thought there was something odd, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it, till i noticed that I had inadvertently taken a picture of five people walking towards five trees.

6.

Is it traditional for every garden to have a secret gate? I think this leads to the walled garden but I like to believe it leads to the secret garden.

7.

Just as we approached the lake we saw this very twee scene of a duck and her 13 ducklings - she hurriedly dashed across the pathway and they all followed behind! It was very cute.

8.

I may have mentioned (a million times or more) that irises are my favourite flower, Sandringham had about 8 different colour variations in bloom the day we were there so I was very much in heaven.

9.

There is a house on the ground called Park House and was once inhabited by George and Mary whilst Queen Alexandra lived in the main house with Edward. Not far from there and leading towards the stables (now converted to tea rooms, museum and the coach house) is a stream and this is that stream, well a little bit of it.

10.

This is the walkway leading to the museum (directly in front), the coach house (to the right) and the tea room (to the left).

Well, I hope you all had a good week too!

10 delicious delicacies to dunk (10)

I am currently on holiday in a place in Norfolk called Heacham. It is a holiday park situated beside the only west facing coast on the east coast. It is about five minutes from Hunstanton which is a typical English seaside. This is the fifth annual family holiday and reminds me of my youth. At least for one week out of the year.

Anyway, today's post is delicious delicacies to dunk! Yummmmmmm.....

Is there anything as de-stressing as dunking a biscuit? Here are some of my favourites.

1. Rich tea.
Rich tea biscuits are plain and simple and with just the right amount of timing you can dip them so that the outside is soft but the centre stays crunchy. Timing is really important with this biscuit as a second too long and you get an island in your cup of tea/coffee/milk. Some people may choose a digestive as their plain biscuits of choice but these make me feel like spitting! TMI?

2. Bourbons
These are a chocolate flavoured biscuit, small rectangle sandwiching some chocolate cream filling. A favourite used to be of dipping this into ice cold milk. My medication has messed with my tastebuds and I can't drink it anymore and so I have stopped eating bourbons but they are still included in this list. Yum!

3. Dark chocolate covered hobnobs.
These also should only be dipped in milk. But...can be eating without dipping...warning: slightly delicious.

4. Custard creams.
The best dipping biscuit for coffee lovers by far in my humble opinion. I consider them synonymous. That is all.

5. Ginger biscuits.
I prefer ginger snaps and again milk is best, I find that when dunking in a hot drink it can make the ginger taste much hotter instead of general ginger warmth.

6. Shortbread
Shortbread is a biscuit that you can nibble and still it clumps up in your mouth and feels like you've taken off a huge bite. Most may prefer coffee to tea with this but I am actually on the fence as to which is best.

7. Viennese fingers
Possibly my favourite biscuit EVER! Again nice dunked in milk. I had not really thought about it but my biscuit eating has been greatly reduced since I have been unable to drink milk.

Ok, so this is as far as I got with this post whilst on holiday! I should have taken the laptop but its at least a lesson learned.

Items 7-10....I actually came unstuck so will be choosing the best three suggestions in the comments!

10 TV shows I can watch on repeat (9)

I like certain shows but I rarely repeat watch. Even shows that I enjoyed the first time I saw them I have rarely watched since that first viewing. Maybe it is something I will do. But for this list I have the shows that I will watch repeats of. Most are comedies, as I guess there are no spoilers with the storylines, and a couple are guilty pleasures.

I thought this would be easy...I thought...let's see how I get on!

1.       Friends
This is a clip from one of my favourite episodes where they put the scary books in the freezer :)

2.       Only fools and horses
A show that I will always love, and the jokes are classic jokes, but my love may also be influenced by having watched it in my childhood.

3.       Buffy
I have the boxset of this and every now and again watch some episodes, I am sure there are a few I haven't seen. It all looks so dated looking back but I guess that's to be expected.

4.       Black Books
When I was burgled they stole my boxset of this and I was mid way through reviewing it! , If you click on the Film/TV page above you will be able to scroll through and see some of the reviews or alternatively type black books into the search box.

5.       Scrubs
I love Scrubs, Dr Cox is my favourite character and his comments and insults make me laugh the most, I even like series 8!!

6.       Nip/Tuck
I havent watched all episodes, the clip is from the pilot, but I have the boxset and I do intend to work my way through them. Some of the themes are really good.

7.       Modern Family
I like this show, when I saw it advertised, read the info and watched the trailer, I thought it would be rubbish! I started watching it and now I love it, Phil Dunphy is my favourite in this show, but the other characters are all close seconds.

8.       Columbo

Columbo is great and I love how he acts like he has no clue whilst all the time revealing the evidence.

9.       Murder She Wrote

Just a clip of the theme tune as all the others were full episodes! Not entirely sure why I watch this, generally its only if nothing else is on, but I can watch episodes that I have seen already. Is that a good enough reason?

10.   Poirot

Another mystery show with the grand 'How it was done reveal' which I seem to enjoy, Poirot is brilliant and I love David Suchet in the role but I also liked Peter Ustinov as Poirot too. This clip has Emily Blunt in it!

I would love any recommendations you have on TV shows that I must watch from start to finish, maybe you have a favourite show?

10 cross stitch projects (8)

Hello and welcome back!

Some of you may remember the great fire of 2013 that destroyed everything I held dear and included in that is some of my WIPs. It is one way of getting your WIPs 'finished off' but not quite the best. This list is made up of my WIPs (2), my stash (5) and my wishlist (3).  So lets not waste another moment and see whats waiting for me....all WIP picture I will upload tomorrow.

1. Spaniola
I just liked this and it was the first almost HAED project that I have started/done.

2. Santa (WIP)
This is the oldest project that I have, and is usually taken out for a week or so at christmas and on occasion it gets a few more stitches.

3. Sampler (WIP)
This is my lunch time project which I stitch at work, so it progresses very slowly, I chose to stitch it on black aida, and also opted for a variegated thread! Why do I punish myself?

4. Mirabila, Lady of the Mist (Stash)
This I liked because of the greens, the flowers and the ladies pose - to me it is as if she is sitting in the garden for the first time that its been warm enough and just enjoying feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin.

5. Gypsy queen ....maybe? (Stash)
I shall dig this out an find out the correct details (and for all the others too) but its very bright and very flamboyant and very orange and my love for orange know no bounds. I just need to get some fabric to stitch all of these projects on.

6. NYC (Stash)
The eagle-eyed amongst you may recall a post I wrote expressing how I NEEDED this pattern and I do now have it. Its bright colours with a christmas theme set in New York all just some of my favourite things.

7. Fantasy Bookshelf (Stash)
I was lucky enough to inherit this when my dear friend Keebs over at Keebles World ordered the wrong version. I have seen some of these in progress and its a very big project!

8. Green Dragonling (Stash)
I have admired many other stitchers Jasmine Beckett-Griffith designs and during a HAED sale I spied this one. I'm not sure if I will stitch it but I do like having it in my stash.

9. Ink Circles Big Red Ship (Wishlist)
I was looking at ink circles designs because Tiffany at tiffstitch had some on her wishlist. This wasnt one of them but as soon as I saw it I thought it was a must have...I don't have it yet....but....its so pretty....heheheh

10. Nora Corbett Spring garden fairy (Wishlist)
Again, I am blaming Tiffany for this, I really like all the spring garden fairies but as blue flowers are my favourite, I opted for this. I also like the bewitching fairies but would like to look out for a SAL to do these. Let me know if you come across any!

Whats number one on your wishlist?

10 Apps I use most on my phone (7)

Another day and another list! I really should do this in the evenings but last night I came across a TV show on Netflix that I found interesting. It was a Danish drama (so it was more reading with moving pictures) and the main character was pretty much Nurse Jackie minus the drugs and even her sidekick was a total rip off. If you haven't seen Nurse Jackie then you won't have any clue but if you have and your interested go and check out 'Rita'.

Anyhoo...I thought I would try and be helpful today with my top ten phone Apps that I just can't live without...ahem....or rather the few that I use most often...in no particular order...

1. Facebook
I rarely check Facebook online, but in the morning I will check it, I am not really interested in status updates but rather the funny videos and interesting articles. I do read some status' but I have to confess that I have blocked seeing some peoples too, lol! As I am sure they have me...even if I don't update it.

2. Gmail
Email counts as an app surely as I use the Gmail app as opposed to using the internet search. I have a lot of junk email and really need to cancel subscriptions and delete all the rubbish....but that will be a job and a half and until Google tell me my account is full...I'll leave it! hehehe

3. Pinterest
I have pinterest on my phone because its really handy and a great distraction on the train or when you are waiting for someone or even looking for inspiration for upcoming projects. My pinterest link is on the sidebar if you're interested :)

4. My bank
This is probably the most important of all these, I check it on payday and I transfer money to people and between accounts and it actually makes me feel in control of my finances. In the old days pre-app I would have just hoped that I had the money or gone to the bank to get cash out to pay people but now I don't have to...only drawback...makes you slightly more anti-social.

5. Elevate
This is a sort of game, its a brain trainer and its one that I have only just started to use, it has fun little tests to do...I can't say if its actually helping but I feel like it is and so I think that means it is?

6. Solitaire
I am addicted to Solitaire on my phone, not even the harder versions, not even Free cell but plain old Klondike. It can sap time so I recommend only play when you have time to sap.

7. Feedly
This is great actually, and it helps me to keep on top of blog reading, sometimes it freaks out and won't let me comment on blogs but be warned I am always watching :)

8. Twitter
I rarely post on Twitter, mainly because I don't have anything to say, and not that many people who I follow have much to say either. A couple of times a week I will just check on whats happening and you can always come across good links to things and news updates. I also have a friend on there who is really only ever to be found there! lol

9. Instagram
I haven't posted anything in an extremely long time but seeing as pictures speak a thousand words and I am all out of words and bored of reading twitter and FB updates, instagram is filling that gap. Photographic communication.

10. Argus
This is a health app or a health/fitness app and you can link up with friends etc. I am not linked up with any friends as I don't know anyone on it....if you are....let me know! What I like most is the way that the information is presented.

taken from here

Well thats all for now! Short and sweet :D Enjoy today...I hate Tuesdays! Grrr!

10 books I am supposed to be reading (6)

Are you on goodreads? If so, lets be friends :D You can find me here

If you are wondering why I am asking its because this is where I have a list of all the books I am currently reading or want to be reading. I have to confess that for every book I read I do start one that is as of now in progress. The majority tend to be non-fiction books that have suitable places to stop and pick up again but on occasion I have a fiction book that I just am not compelled to finish but still want to try to. One of my failings is not reading enough. I blame the fact that I can read relatively swiftly (4hrs per novel) and that in itself means the story has been and gone before I am invested. The very best books tend to lead me on a merry chase of reading books similar to it, set in the same environment, written with the same themes and if there is a film version, yes, you guessed it, I will watch it. Below is a list of books I am reading and that I want to read....and please please recommend your favourite books!

1. An Autobiography by Agatha Christie (Non-fiction)
I downloaded this to my kindle which I have a habit of forgetting to charge. However, I really do want to read some more of this as I am about a chapter in. Heres a description:
Over the three decades since her death on 12 January 1976, many of Agatha Christie’s readers and reviewers have maintained that her most compelling book is probably still her least well-known. Her candid Autobiography, written mainly in the 1960s, modestly ignores the fact that Agatha had become the best-selling novelist in history and concentrates on her fascinating private life. From early childhood at the end of the 19th century, through two marriages and two World Wars, and her experiences both as a writer and on archaeological expeditions with her second husband, Max Mallowan, Agatha shares the details of her varied and sometimes complex life with real passion and openness.

2. Awakening the Buddha within by Lama Surya Das (Non-fiction)
This is a book that I found whilst perusing a charity shop. I am very interested in spirituality and faith as a whole. Buddhism is very much something that I can relate to and this book is a good read. I am about half way through, and have stopped and started, but it is easy to do so. The writing style is very much that of a friend talking to you quite informally about their life and its this combination of biography and fact that I enjoy. Everyone has a story.
Lama Surya Das, the most highly trained American lama in the Tibetan tradition, presents the definitive book on Western Buddhism for the modern-day spiritual seeker.
The radical and compelling message of Buddhism tells us that each of us has the wisdom, awareness, love, and power of the Buddha within; yet most of us are too often like sleeping Buddhas.  In Awakening the Buddha Within, Surya Das shows how we can awaken to who we really are in order to lead a more compassionate, enlightened, and balanced life.

3. The secret history of wonder woman (Non-fiction)
I started reading this because I like super heroes and I love wonder woman and also I am a woman who believes in equality for all. I am only a couple of chapters into this book (again its on the blasted kindle) and its interesting to say the least. It definitely is making me think as I read which is not a bad thing at all.
A riveting work of historical detection revealing that the origin of one of the world’s most iconic superheroes hides within it a fascinating family story—and a crucial history of twentieth-century feminism
Wonder Woman, created in 1941, is the most popular female superhero of all time. Aside from Superman and Batman, no superhero has lasted as long or commanded so vast and wildly passionate a following. Like every other superhero, Wonder Woman has a secret identity. Unlike every other superhero, she has also has a secret history.

4. The Knitting Circle by Ann Hood (Fiction)
I was drawn to this book by its title and the fact that I am interested in knitting. I wish there was a knitting circle near me or a cross stitch one. Anyway, its on my kindle (aagh!) and I am about 3 chapters in. It is ok, I can't say much as its only the beginning but its ok....as far as I remember!
Come on in and join the knitting circle – it might just save your life…
Spinning yarns, weaving tales, mending lives…
Every Wednesday a group of women gathers at Alice's Sit and Knit. Little do they know that they will learn so much more than patterns…
Grieving Mary needs to fill the empty days after the death of her only child.
Glamorous Scarlet is the life and soul of any party. But beneath her trademark red hair and beaming smile lurks heartache.
Sculptor Lulu seems too cool to live in the suburbs. Why has she fled New York's bright lights?
Model housewife Beth never has a hair out of place. But her perfect world is about to fall apart….
Irish-born Ellen wears the weight of the world on her shoulders but not her heart on her sleeve. What is she hiding?
As the weeks go by, under mysterious Alice's watchful eye, an unlikely friendship forms. Secrets are revealed and pacts made. Then tragedy strikes, and each woman must learn to face her own past in order to move on…

5. A Conneticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court by Mark Twain (Fiction)
I decided along with a friend, back in February, to try to read some books from a reading challenge and so my to read list is full of random books selected purely because they fit a category. This book is one of them. I used to watch a TV show back in the late 80s, early 90s? called Never the Twain, it was too old guys bickering basically (as I recall) but I liked it and I like Huckleberry Finn so why not try this. Have you read it? What did you think?
This novel tells the story of Hank Morgan, the quintessential self-reliant New Englander who brings to King Arthur’s Age of Chivalry the “great and beneficent” miracles of nineteenth-century engineering and American ingenuity. Through the collision of past and present, Twain exposes the insubstantiality of both utopias, destroying the myth of the romantic ideal as well as his own era’s faith in scientific and social progress.

6. The girl with the dragon tattoo by Stieg Larsson (Fiction)
I have been meaning to read this book ever since its release, and I can't tell  you why I havent because I have no excuse, as it appeals to me. I like to watch those bleak Scandinavian crime dramas and as someone who loves to read crime thrillers I thought this would be good. Then whilst I was still meant to be reading it, the next book came out and the film was released, and I have yet to see the film.
Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch—and there's always a catch—is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don't want to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo

7. Blankets by Craig Thompson (Fiction, Graphic Novel)
About three years ago, I stumbled upon another reading challenge and it was related to Graphic Novels, something that had long appealed to me yet I hadnt read were graphic novels. The first one I picked up was 'The Walking Dead' and maybe it was more than three years ago because it was about 6 months before the TV show came out that I began to read them. I won't go on about them now but a post may be needed at a later date. But on the list of recommended graphic novels is this one called Blankets.
Wrapped in the landscape of a blustery Wisconsin winter, Blankets explores the sibling rivalry of two brothers growing up in the isolated country, and the budding romance of two coming-of-age lovers. A tale of security and discovery, of playfulness and tragedy, of a fall from grace and the origins of faith.

8. Me talk pretty one day by David Sedaris (Non-fictionish)
A comedic look at life and a move from NYC to Paris, whats not to appeal about that? I have visited Paris and I loved it. I really cannot explain why, maybe it was that it was overwhelmingly french or that I felt like I was in a movie, I don't know exactly but I want to go back. I met a young woman there who was from Sweden but had left to go to France for three months to learn french. Just like that. I was impressed by her carefree attitude about something that I would consider a huge thing. She had literally just gone to Paris and was looking for lodgings! Anyway, as someone who loves languages but fears speaking to a native of that language (even with the basics that I have learnt) this appealed to me along with it being a book of short stories.
David Sedaris' move to Paris from New York inspired these hilarious pieces, including the title essay, about his attempts to learn French from a sadistic teacher who declares that "every day spent with you is like having a caesarean section".
His family is another inspiration. You Can't Kill the Rooster is a portrait of his brother, who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers of food and cashiers with six-inch fingernails.

 9. Ariel by Sylvia Plath (Poetry)
Can you believe that I have never read Sylvia Plath EVER! Hence this is on the list.
"In these poems...Sylvia Plath becomes herself, becomes something imaginary, newly, wildly and subtly created." -- From the Introduction by Robert Lowell

10.  This slot is empty because of the 80 books I "apparently" want to read, only 9 are calling out to me....so help me add something here by recommending your favourite novel or the last novel you read.

Thanks :D

10 things you'll find in my handbag (5)

So...the self-saboteur that lives in my brain informed me yesterday that as it was a Saturday that I didnt need to post....yeah right! Mother nature was kicking my butt so i'm adding that to my excuse pile. So here I am, sat in my garden, sun shining, bee harassing me and poised to post not once but twice today.

So...lets kick it all off with the simplest list on my list of lists...or at least I thought it would be until I realised that I have an aversion to unwanted items in my handbag.

1. Purse
I have a purse but all I keep in it is small change, bank card and ID. It is a nice pink leather Radley purse and my iphone fits in that if I just want to use that instead of the large bag.

2. Iphone
I do keep this in my bag whenever it is not tucked in my bra strap...heheh....ladies with larger boobies might relate more to this extra storage space.

3.Other cards
Other cards are kept here and by other its mainly loyalty cards...you can't seem to go anywhere without being given one, stamps too go with these cards, and also my pre-paid prescription card! Very important.

4.Pen
I have to have a pen, I may need to write something down, and it has to be in blue ink. Although I must confess that my current pen is black ink and that's only because it was a gift from a friend who went to Hobbiton in New Zealand.

5.Notebook
I have a small hardback notebook. Its ideal for writing in with pen mentioned above! When inspiration strikes I can write it down, or any other mundane things that I feel need noting.

6. Keys
Yes, door key, An essential I think.

7. Sanitary stuff.
Yes, emergency sanitary stuff, not a suitcase full but a couple of items in case I get caught out.

8. Painkillers.
Obviously, for headaches and any other aches and my painkiller of choice is Ibuprofen.

9. Perfume.
Currently I have Roberto Cavalli perfume in my bag...because I absolutely love it and just the smell can cheer me up so its great to have.

10. Hairbrush
My hair has an inate ability to look a mess at any given moment in time and my small handbag sized hairbrush is perfect for those moments.

Wow! I was actually easier to think of things than I thought....but that is about everything in my bag...and yes...admittedly this is a pretty dull post...so help me out guys and tell me what random, unusual, unexpected items you have in your handbag.

10 songs to sing whilst dancing around in your bedroom in your underwear (4)

There are some rules as to what can be considered worthy of going on this list…

  1. It has to be cheesy/crazy/happy/empowering.
  2. Has to evoke spontaneous booty shaking or over acting out of the lyrics or singing at the top of your lungs.
A friend and I created a playlist of the same name as this post only we weren’t limited to 10 and we came to rest at 49!! So, as you can imagine it was a bit tricky to select a mere 10, so I pressed play random and these were the first 10 that were played.  If you are on Spotify you can find the full list here:  Songs to sing whilst dancing around your bedroom in your underwear

1. Cheerleader – Felix Jaehn Remix

A relatively recent release that made the list, it’s a nice summery happy-ish sounding song.

2. Poker Face – Lady Gaga

Yes, the old Lady Gaga and not the new Jazz singing version.

3. Womanizer – Britney Spears

Love her or hate her, she was given some great songs (or wrote them herself, who knows? Anyone?) I also really love the video!

4. Mickey – Toni Basil

An old one but a good one, for those retro moments, but please don’t apply mascara whilst singing along to this.

5. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen

Anyone remember the hullaballoo with this song? All the spoof/cover version videos?

6. Cooler Than Me – Mike Posner

I like this song…cos seriously…do you really think you’re cooler than me? p.s I live in Britain and I am sat next to the window! Pretty cool.

7. Raise Your Glass – P!nk

I love P!nk – I like the lyrics to her songs, I like her attitude, and I just think she is great. This one has to be a ‘getting ready to go out song’.

8. Love In The First Degree – Bananarama

Another old one but c’mon people…its Bananarama, even if we aren’t walking like an Egyptian.

9. My Life Would Suck Without You – Kelly Clarkson

This is a fun shouty song.

10. Zombie – The Cranberries

The final song on this too short list, I challenge you not to scream along to the chorus.

Sadly, it is only a top ten and these were a random selectioin, there are so many others and such great tunes but I would love to know what your go to dancing-around-the-house song is? What songs would you see on the list? What songs on the list do you hate?

10 most popular of my Five Sentence Fiction pieces (3)

10 most popular pieces of writing from the lifetime of my blog

(in order of popularity)

1. Conquer

In the mad rush to bear arms and stand firm, young Michael had found himself pushed to the front of the army, he would be one of the first to battle.

He glanced behind to see if he could find a way to move further back, but the one thousand men and boys were staying close together, as they anticipated the Commanders signal.

It was not his first battle, he had been trained to fight for twelve of his sixteen years, but there would be no tomorrow if they were to lose today.

He couldn't let his fear defeat him, he was here to defend the lives of those he loved and he was prepared to do so to the death.

As the Commander gave the battle cry Michael and the others returned it in unison and moving as one they ran forward, weapons cocked, eyes wide, blood searing through their veins, the enemy in sight.

2. Whisper

An empty room can be so full your body is crushed into a ball.

A dark room can be so bright it burns your eyes.

A whisper can pass through you pulling at your senses; inhaling a hollow aroma, tasting the bitterness of nothing, seeing shadows swirl around, listening for an echo that won't come.

A cold room can make you sweat as if sat next to a furnace.

A silent room holds secrets that it never tells.

3.Composure

The sweat dripped off of her forehead, onto her lap, her panting began to slow and the shaking had eased, her legs were throbbing still and who knew how they would feel in the morning.

She caught her breath, and started to remove her cardigan, she was hot and she couldn’t remember the last time that she had walked at such a pace, she had been practically running, her arms swinging, feet pounding the footpath and all in time to the thoughts racing through her mind.

When she had left her house, she was angry, upset, frustrated, disappointed and repentant, now after 45 minutes of walking like her life depended on it, her thoughts had slowed, she was less angry, more disappointed, reflective and had a brighter outlook.

But it was still there, all that pain, confusion, hurt, it was still there, just pushed to the back, right at the back to join all those other times.

The only evidence left was another brick in the wall that she was slowly building, the wall that kept her safe from all this pain, the wall she could hide behind, the wall she put up for all to see, a wall that was strong, solid and unrelenting, a wall that could withstand any weather.

4. Empty

Hap was feeling tense as he clenched his jaw, held his breath and ever so slowly reached an arm out from his hiding place under the desk and fumbled around for the envelope he knew to be there.

It was the final piece in the puzzle, he knew the photograph inside would lead him to the birthday suit murderer who had been terrorising the town of Texarkana.

The corner of the envelope tickled his fingertips and he needed a little more reach, biting on his lip as he stretched further, he finally had a hold, clinging tightly he grabbed it to him and tore it open.

Hap was determined to catch the killer and as he opened the envelope he didn’t hear the office door, his full attention focussed on its contents or lack thereof as he was surprised to find the envelope was empty.

‘Looking for something?’ a voice said from above him, Hap looked up and was greeted with the barrel of the gun, it was the killer on the other end who flung back his head in a cackle of venom fuelled laughter, at which point Hap saw his moment to save the town and pulled out the revolver he kept in his sock and shot him dead.

5. Detour

Sleeping, silent, a gentle purr,
Curled up, so small, a ball of Fur.

Listening, alert, a familiar sound,
Footsteps, padding along the ground.

Paused, still, not even a flicker,
Eyes dart, mind whirrs, which way is quicker.

Glaring, a look, the window is shut,
How to escape that dastardly mutt.

Jumping, up high, to the top of the fridge,
A shelf, on the wall, that serves as a bridge.

6. Zombie

She stood there looking at him, part shock and part embarrassment, she knew that he was waiting for her to say something but standing there open-mouthed, head lolling and eyes unblinking, all she could muster was 'ugh, gur, erm, ig, agh...'

Come on she told herself, you can do this, just say something, anything, standing here acting like an extra from The Walking Dead is really not improving this date.

She was surprised he hadn't just turned around and walked out already. She needed to refocus on something other than his stare that was very intent on giving her eyeballs a good pummeling.

She tilted her head down and looked at his chest, and there emblazoned across it was 'Night of the Living Dead'...she just might be able to salvage this date yet!

7. Shadows

The leaves rustled as the wind gently swished past them, causing Melody’s dress to flutter and threaten to expose her underwear,  she quickened her pace and with one hand she held onto the side of her dress; pulling the fabric tight to one side so it bunched in her hand and the dress clung to her thighs.

Although she could hear the cars that passed on the road nearby, the air itself seemed weighed down with an echoing silence, and she loosened the fabric slightly so she could move faster.

She always stayed close to the road, to people and to noise as like many she was scared of the dark; she did not fear the dark itself but what could be hidden out of sight, what could cause those shadows that she often saw or imagined, what could be waiting there for her.

She reached her destination, slightly out of breath, but with plenty of time and she released her skirt so she could move freely.

She opened her bag and pulled out her keys and threw them onto the middle of the pathway, Melody shuffled back into the shadows, and with one hand on her gun she waited, unseen, for him to come.

8. Memories

She was sick to death of people taking it upon themselves to point out that she came across as a very cold stand-offish person (how bloody dare they!), and hadn't she been through enough to warrant her behavior, didn't they reailse that she was fighting every day to maintain some semblance of stability and they could get lost if they thought that would change just because they suggested it.

She sat there in the cafe with her hands wrapped around the empty mug, clinging to the warmth as it slowly faded, the warmth that she no longer had in her life, and as she looked out the window at the passers by she gave a sigh of relief that she had survived another day.

Then, with no warning she felt her body begin to shake, her face was warm and her eyes stung and she reached up to find that tears were pouring down her face, tears that she had been fighting for what seemed like forever, tears that wouldn't come when she wanted them to but wouldn't stop now, tears that only showed her weakness and belied her strength.

The sobs followed, big gulping sobs, heart wrenching sobs full of abandonment and loneliness, sobs that too could not be held back, sobs that made the people in the cafe stare at her and start to leave, sobs that reminded her of a seals bark and made her wish that she could escape and swim away.

It seemed like forever had passed, but it couldn't have been more than a minute or so, when she finally managed to screech  "TURN THAT DAMN MUSIC OFF!" and very quietly under her breath "its breaking my heart..."

9. Abandoned

Please don't leave me

I have to

You don't have to...please...

I have to

Please don't leave me

10. Devotion

‘Sorry about that, I had something caught in my throat, ahem, wow, that’s better’ she said as she smiled up at him somewhat innocently.

‘So…you say you’re the artist? Where did you get your inspiration for this..erm..piece?’ she said as she waved her hand nonchalantly at the painting.

He snarled at her, he actually snarled at her, his lip curled up in one corner and he had a look of disdain plastered an inch thick all over his face, she knew he thought very little of her already but she was determined to salvage something of the evening and she was devoted to at least seeing it through to the bitter end.

‘the women in my life inspire me, and the everyday situations that we find ourselves in’ he practically spat at her.

‘I’m surprised you had enough for the one painting!’ she sneered back.

All of these were written in 2013 which just goes to show how long its been since I took part in Five Sentence Fiction! I hope that you liked at least one of them. See you tomorrow!

10 superhero powers people wish they had (2)

10 Superhero powers people wish they had (in no particular order)

1. Fly
Is this the most popular of powers? I am not a fan of heights so flying around doesn't appeal to me. I would imagine that I would get distracted and fly into something, a plane, a helicopter, a building or a tree. Also, when you arrived anywhere your hair would be a total mess! The speed of flight is never specified and a single power of only flight wouldn't be so great, now flight and super strength or flight and super speed and we have Superman, but just being able to fly...meh!

2. Morph
This is definitely one I would consider, if I had the choice, I would be Mystique! lol! You could be anything, a fly on the wall (so I wouldn't need invisibility powers), a bird (so I wouldn't need flight powers)...and so on. Its decided, I'm sending my application into Marvel...right now...Oh I can't wait!

3.Speak to animals
My niece would LOVE this one. She is fascinated with animals, and is great with them, and loves to care for them and learn how to communicate. She is 6 and she told me the other day that she wished she knew what animals were thinking, awwww. She actually thinks I can speak to cats as mine is very odd and reacts to what I am saying as if she understands me....honest!

4. Invisible
It would be great to be invisible sometimes, but the issue I have is that it usually means only you are invisible and your clothes aren't, I am sensitive to the cold and I am not sure that would work for me. Plus, where would I be that I needed to be invisible....realistically...I'm not a spy...honest!

5. Healing
This would be good, but if you have ever watched a sci-fi programme in your life then you know that it always comes with consequences. Maybe you cure the person but they walk out in front of a bus, or you cure them and someone else gets taken ill, there always seems to be something to undermine this super power.

I once watched a documentary about a girl who lived somewhere in South America I think and she was seriously ill but had healing powers - at least people believed that she could heal them. Its a very complex subject of healing from the mind and I won't go on about it right now, but do you think its possible?
If you do opt for this super power then my advice to you....check the small print!

6. Super strength
This is a power that really is a supplementary power, on its own, sure its pretty impressive but combine it with others and its brilliant. Its what transitions you from banana man to the Avengers.

7. Time travel
Time travel must be extremely popular, and I would love to be able to travel back in time, the success of Dr Who is surely an indicator of this and the TV show that annoys the hell out of me 'Outlander' has it as the root of the story.

I can't imagine going forward in time, but if you wanted to predict the future you could do it this way, but then you have the whole timeline changing thing.

That is a flaw with this, you really do need to know your history and be able to predict what would happen based on levels of changes that are made in the past. If you could go back only to watch and not to interact then that would be a pretty frustrating power to have and you might be better off watching the history channel at home instead!

8. Telepathy
The ability to communicate through the mind. Is this real or a super power? Are twins telepathic or just tuned into their siblings thought patterns (as they are the same as them)? I don't think this is all too exciting, but it saves shouting from the living room to the hubby to make you a cuppa.

9. Omnilinguism
This may be my third choice, not least because its a very handy skill, its annoying when you can't eavesdrop on peoples conversations because they are speaking in a language you don't know. Travel would be a breeze.

There is one person in the world who has this super power and that's Santa so at least we know that its definitely possible!

10. Super speed
This is for the lazy people, and the best thing is...according to The Flash...you burn bucketloads of calories doing it. So you can do things really quickly, like dash to the shops to get chocolate, and then eat it guilt free! Oh...and also get help in an emergency...sure. Best combined with super strength.

Honorable Mentions

Mind control - This is for the super villains amongst us, I wouldnt want to control anyone else like this, straight forward manipulation techniques are just fine...heheheh...I watched the 2012 film Ruby Sparks last night and that has a sort of mind control theme.

Intangibility - This is the ability to pass through any matter. Keys be gone. Jail? No cage can keep me. A handy skill for those forgetful people and criminals.

Force Field - This power is for all those introverts and the anti-social. You could put a force field around just you and keep everyone at bay....oh, and use it to protect people from attack of course.

What super power would you most want? What super power would you least want? Do you have a super hero alter ego? Tell me more.

I hope to see you tomorrow when I give you my top ten most heeded superstitions.
