From beyond the grave....+GBF part 17.25

Hello,

I feel like I have neglected so many people lately, but the move is imminent and once done I shall be back with vengeance. I am so glad to those who still take time to stop by my blog, read my scribbling’s and even comment.

I tend to use this as my journal and so regular readers will know that if I write something, you will read it, even in its raw state. I have one I really want to share with you but apparently I am supposed to keep some of these things to myself until they are finished and in a final presentational state. It has been so hard not to share it!

Seriously, so hard…as some sort of consolation I have written a few hundred words of Girls Best Friend! It’s not much, but its okay… (reminds me of a song)…

Friday night you used to stop by here to read, uh
Would you like it?
But it was never regular-i-ly, what I did
If six of y'all read it, uh
Then four of you were really sweet, yeah
'Cause twas two of you made comments
And two decided they would tweet

It's not much, but it's okay
I'm gonna post it anyway
Sit right down drink your tea
And don't be scared about Mark or our Millie
It's not much, but it's okay
I'm gonna post it anyway
Close the door behind you, sit and read
I'd rather give you this so you aren’t unhappy, yeah, uh

I'll ask you to email so I can send you updates every week, yes I am
The mailing list will close so don’t say to me
Why'd you stop posting about Millie
You see Elvis was one of her friends
Best dog you’d ever meet, boy
And now Millie has a case of mistaken I.D., oh
I've mentioned this all before

Don't think about it, don't think about it
Get listed, get listed
Things have got to change baby
You have to subscribe to my mailing
Say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Don't you be the last to find out
There's more to come from Justin, Justin, Rob and Millie

Is it really worth you missing out like that, tell me, oh
See I'm writing on
And I refuse to turn back, yeah
See all of this time I thought I had somebody still reading
It turns out, I was making a fool of me, oh
Join up okay
Mailing list today
Write an email, send it to me
Don't you worry, soon be back to Millie

It's not much, it's okay I'm gonna, I'm gonna, uh
Close your door and drink your tea
Rather be receiving updates, yippee
It's not much, It's okay baby I can email my own account
Join the list now
Take care of my business, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh Lord, oh Lord, ooo
Give it up and leave
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Rather be subscribed, than unhappy

Its gonna be okay, Its gonna be alright Its gonna be okay, Its gonna be alright Its gonna be okay, Its gonna be alright Doo, doo, doo, doo Its gonna be okay, Its gonna be alright Its gonna be okay, Its gonna be alright Its gonna be okay, Its gonna be alright
Doo, doo, doo

It's not much, but it's okay
I'm gonna post it anyway
Sit right down drink your tea
And don't be scared about Mark and our Millie
It's not much, but it's okay
I'm gonna post it anyway
Close the door behind you, take your tea
I'd rather give you this so you aren’t unhappy, yeah, uh

I hope you enjoyed my version of Whitneys song…Oh dear…I just don’t want anyone to miss out and then tell me that they never knew. So I implore you, if you think you would like to read more about Millie then send me an email at AuthorMarjieMyers@gmail.com and I shall add you to the mailing list. Better to be on it than not. You will also receive exclusive content and stories that won’t be shared on the blog.

So, without further ado, here are those few hundred words…Its not much, but its okay…(don’t start that again!)…

“…hang on, wait…how do you know all this? Are you just making it up as you go along Mark?” Millie had her suspicions that this story could be genuine but hadn’t all her most revealing moments been in the stationery cupboard at Rob, Roberts and Robertson? Millie didn’t believe that Mark would lie to her.

“It’s the truth!” Mark exclaimed, “last Christmas work party, Rob got really drunk and told me the story, although at the time I thought I t was pure fiction…it turns out its all true...do you want to hear the rest?”

Millie looked at the road and saw that they were in a place called Alcobendas, “How long till Madrid?” “about 30 minutes…do you want to hear the rest of this story?”, “hmmm…” Millie was distracted, “Pull over here Mark, I need to get something…you can finish telling me the story later.” Mark pulled over and Millie leapt out, she dashed into the Famacia Serrano Sanchez and left Mark staring hopelessly after her. She wasn’t long as she had seen what she wanted straight away and she jumped back in the car clinging to her plastic shopping bag. “Well…what was that all about?” Mark asked, “I needed something, now lets go, I can’t wait to get a shower…I feel like I haven’t washed in a month”, Mark just shook his head, squinted a little at her secrecy and drove on to the hotel that they were to stay in.

Mark checked them in to separate rooms and as he handed the key over to Milie he said, “ and don’t think of running off Millie…I want to help you find your dog, I want to help Mr Rob and I want that diamond.” And he turned and headed off to his room leaving Millie open-mouthed in the hallway. So, the truth was out, Mark was only helping her because he wanted to get his mitts on the diamond and not because (as she had naively began to think) that he was her friend and genuinely a good guy. She wasn’t about to run off. She had to meet with one of the kidnappers, maybe even Anne again, outside the Royal Palace of Madrid at midnight.

What do you think?

I am pondering the possibility of publishing Girls Best Friend (when finished of course!) but that would mean removing it from my blog, wattpad etc.

I don't want to disappoint those who are currently reading along and wondered what you think about joining a mailing list, so when I write each instalment (the same as i currently do), I will email it to those on the mailing list ONLY.

What do you think? Or shall we just leave it as is? I would really appreciate some feedback, I am leaning towards the mailing list idea - but if you would rather it was kept online and not-published at any point then I am happy to go with the majority?

Once I figure the best way to sort out a mailing list then I will post it here and remind you weekly to join it in case you dont see this post or that one.

Did that make sense?

Lets hope so!

UPDATE: Email me at AuthorMarjieMyers@gmail.com if you want to receive new instalments of Girls Best Friend! Do it now before you forget :)

Write 4 Ten: SPACE

I have this week taken part in Write 4 Ten, Mondays prompt was SPACE. It can be any definition, use or interpretation. So with this in mind, I sat and wrote for ten minutes and this is what I wrote, its the first time I have written a non-fiction entry. Feedback welcomed :)

As I lay on my bed gazing out of the window at the rain thrashing down, I have a combined feeling of annoyance and nostalgia; annoyed because its summer and I should be out feeling the warm rays caressing my skin, and nostalgia for the pleasure a rain storm can bring. The sky is blue amongst the heavy undulating grey clouds and as I stare into its infinite density, I am there…in Africa…lying on my bed.

The window is shuttered and the power has gone out. The darkness draws in around you causing your skin to cool, an affront to the blistering heat that a moment before had caused it to shimmer in sweat. Then it starts; a tip, a tap, a pitter, a patter…the rain builds up momentum until it is pounding the tin roof. The noise it makes, as it ricochets off the tin, is the only audible sound and at once you are deafened and cocooned by the raucous echo about the room. Holding your breath you wait to see if the roof collapses on you. Your breathing becomes shallower the longer the rain lasts, picking up its own rhythm, a gentle sway as if you are drifting on the ocean. Soon your eyes are heavy and sleep beckons, your body enjoying the respite from maintaining your temperature; you have no energy left and drift off onto the clouds and into dreams of ice cream and swimming pools.

The alarm sounds and I am brought back to my bed in England, the rain has stopped but the clouds still hang there pregnant with the expectation of more.

Mini-reviews: Star Trek

Last Saturday, I went to the Cinema alone for the first time as an adult…I decided that the subscription that I paid for was underused by yours truly and so I would spend the day there and watch a few.

I can confess that I overdosed on films, I would have been fine at home but I guess it’s my age because but the volume was too loud! I also can’t watch 3D films, so 2D it was. I actually had a headache and felt nauseous when I left which was not related to the films, honest!

So I saw Star Trek, Mud, Deadfall (by accident) and 21&Over.

My rating:

Star Trek: 3.6

This is out of 5 and I should confess that even I think I am a harsh judge at times but let’s be honest shall we….

Star Trek

I know that Star Trek always has hideous accents and it’s almost a trademark now but they still annoy me, grrr! What with an Englishman being a Scotsman and an American being a Russian and a Kiwi being an American, it was painful at times. In addition to that, it took a good 30-40 minutes before the film actually got started and the mission that we saw at the beginning was tenuously linked to the rest, I imagine it was edited out, but even now it just seems pointless in retrospect. It seemed like a lot of that story at the beginning was to focus on Spock but I feel it should have been written better. The film was definitely Spockcentric. Zoe Saldana seemed to be a clingy girlfriend for the main part, it was only when SPOILER she spoke Klingon that it dawned on me that in the old Star Trek, languages had been Uhuru’s speciality. I definitely would have preferred more depth of story and a little less gratuitous nonsense.

Benedict Cumberbatch was good which was to be expected, and there was a lot of action, and each of the main characters had their ‘moment’ . I am madly in love with John Cho (ever since Harold & Kumar) and so seeing him on the big screen was great. It was entertaining but probably something I would have been equally happy seeing on DVD. I guess it does depend how big a Star Trek fan you are.

Overall, I felt like it was a small story in a big jacket.

..the rest to follow!

Girls Best Friend: Part 16

I know its not June! But I thought you could have part 16 to tide you over...if that is you havent given up reading it :)

Here its is.....

Robert Rob had just started working at the best criminal law firm in the City. He was only working weekends and evenings filing whilst he studied Law at the nearby university, but everyone had told him it was a great chance and in all likeliness they would sponsor him whilst he did his LPC and he could get a training place there.

Rob mostly filed, but he liked it and his course mates were jealous too, often joking that he had “connections”. When he had been given the job they had told him that he would be rotating around several departments starting with assisting the team who dealt with the high profile criminal cases. On the same day that he started with them they took on a new case.

The team was headed by two lawyers who were very well known Roberts and Robertson. They had represented a lot of criminals and had even managed to get the guilty ones off, or at least that was what people told Rob when they found out who he worked for. Despite the dubious character of their customers, they worked hard and they showed Rob how to use the law to his advantage. That is not what happened with this case.

The case itself involved the infamous Fratelli Twins who had been arrested for murder, armed robbery, handling of stolen goods, kidnapping and that was just the tip of the iceberg. They never denied their guilt but they only asked that Roberts and Robertson were able to get them life imprisonment at a fairly luxurious prison, ideally the one that Jeffrey Archer was incarcerated in. The youngest Fratelli wanted to be a novelist and said if it’s good enough for Archer then it’s good enough for me.

During the trial, Roberts and Robertson has asked Rob to come into work on a Saturday, it was unusual but Rob was happy for the extra money and the experience. Arriving at the offices he noticed that there were more cars than usual in the car park and the reception had a security guard sat at it which he assumed was the norm. The place seemed eerily quiet as he took the lift to the 4th floor to meet his bosses. As the doors opened he heard shouting coming from the corridor and he called out to Roberts and Robertson but heard no reply. Rob wasn’t surprised as the shouting grew louder and he followed the sound till he was standing outside the stationery cupboard.

The shouting stopped and his stomach leapt into his throat as he was filled with panic at the very thought that they had heard him. He was in two minds as to whether he should knock or cough or something but he didn’t need to do either as the voices started up again. Instantly, he recognised Roberts voice,

“We are your solicitors Mr Fratelli, we cannot handle stolen goods, you really are putting us into a compromising position” he whimpered.

“I disagree. And I am never wrong. Do you understand? No-one disagrees with me. Kapiche.”

Rob swallowed hard, he was scared and he was outside the room, he couldn’t imagine how Roberts was feeling or how he even had the courage to speak. The Fratellis were 100% nasty on every level. Even when they were being professional (or so they said) they made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and you felt compelled to be anywhere but in the same room as them.

Rob heard Robertson speak next, in what sounded like complete exasperation, he said, “Okay…okay…” Roberts interrupted, “What?! What are you saying? If we are caught our lives will be over, we might as well let them kill us now.”

Robertsons voice remained calm, “Look, I know what I am doing and we really don’t have a choice, trust me. Mr Fratelli we would love to help but let’s get you into a comfortable prison first shall we”. Rob was always impressed by Robertsons ability to be officious and complimentary at the same time. He heard The Fratellis mumble something and Rob hid in the cleaning cupboard as he saw the handle turn on the stationery room door.

Through a crack down the side of the door he saw them all leave, Roberts and Robertson followed up the rear, Rob was glad to see that they weren’t hurt and as he was about to leave the cupboard he heard Robertson say to Roberts, keep it in the stationery cupboard, no-one will look there.

As soon as they were gone he went straight in there and started searching, with no idea what he was searching for, that was until he saw the light catch it and he was dazzled. It was a very large diamond. As in VERY large. He picked it up and a lightbulb went on in his head as he realised that this was the White Majesty diamond that was stolen by the Fratellis and never recovered. He put it down quickly. Then he picked it up again and was mesmerised by the light dancing off it. He put it down. He picked it up. He put it down. What if anyone suspected his bosses of concealing stolen goods? What if they came and searched the offices? He picked it back up. He put it down into his jeans pocket and made the decision to hide it at home until the trial was over. He would tell Roberts and Robertson what he had done and they could hide it again later. He was about to leave the stationery cupboard when he caught his reflection in the filing cabinet drawer, the diamond made his jeans bulge in quite an unbecoming manner, he took it out and shoved it into his Doc Martin boot. It dug into him and he had a small limp but it would be ok till he got home.

On his way back to the lift, he was very careful not to be seen, and when he stepped into the reception area he remembered the security guard. He doubted that he was paying that much attention anyway and strode out and home.

He ran straight to his room and changed his shoes, shoving the Doc Martins to the back of the wardrobe, and then rushed back to work.

This time when he arrived the security guard was gone. He went up to the offices again and was relieved to see that The Fratellis had left.

“Morning” he said brightly to his bosses and they both looked up and smiled at him.

“Morning Rob thought you were going to be a no-show, we have some files to go through before Monday…” and they started work, Rob never had a moment that seemed right when he could tell them about the diamond.

Several hours later and Rob was sweaty, dusty and ready to go home when the silence of the office they were working in was invaded by the sound of police sirens outside. They all moved to the window in time to see armed police enter the building. From the corner of his eye he saw Roberts and Robertson exchange panicked glances.

The police left disappointed that their source had been mistaken, but not before leaving a mess of the entire building, and they vowed that they would be keeping an eye on them.

Roberts and Robertson asked Rob to give them a minute, which he assumed would be when they would try to work out why the police hadn’t found the diamond. For want of something better to do he went to the stationery cupboard to find a decent hiding place for white majesty.

Bank Holiday Monday Mixer!

Hello,

I can't believe how quiet I have been this past week but here is my contribution to Monday Mixer. Today (in the UK) is Bank Holiday Monday and so I took 20 minutes out to have a go. What do you think?

Skullectra!

The excitement built in the pit of her stomach as she stood amid a repository of Skullectra fans. Scanning the crowd in the arena she smiled at the number of middle-aged, balding, leather-clad rockers there.

The stage had been set, the instruments were poised, a long walkway protruded out splitting the crowd like a portmanteau. Her skin began to tingle as silence settled on the crowd.

The still sexy lead singer strutted onto the stage carrying his trademark concertina. As usual, he was voluble as he thanked the fans for their support, and for a moment she worried they would disappoint.

The lights flashed, the drum corralled and the guitar began to wail as Skullectra began their comeback tour.  The music roared and rallied as it had in ‘83, the band effulgent as they played their original hits. The middle-aged, balding, leather-clad rockers head banged in unison as did she.

a repository, arena, portmanteau, concertina, voluble, effulgent

I have no idea if there is a band called Skullectra?!
