Them & US: C is for Cougar Town

How many TV shows begin with 'C'! Sooooo many and I wanted to mention more than one! But I opted for Cougar Town. I remember when this show was advertised and I instantly thought....there is no way in hell that I am watching a TV show based on a divorced older woman dating young men her sons age! I hate the term Cougar or there is another one like Panther or something but both denote a predatory animal stalking and capturing her prey. Women are so far from that when it comes to affairs of the heart, even if they try to be, a little piece of them is effected. Men who do the same thing are Sugar Daddies....and its sexist!

Oh dear! That turned a bit ranty....but originally that is what I thought. But a friend recommended I should give it a try, especially as it had some of my favourite actors and was produced by Bill Lawrence (of Scrubs fame...I LOVE Scrubs!).

So I watched it, and the first episode did have Courtney Cox character with a younger man and her boyfriend ends up younger but he is in his late thirties and its realistic.

IMDB says;

A recently divorced woman decides to find some excitement in her dating life.

I think this is misleading because she gets a boyfriend very early on and her dating life is hardly exciting, it is very misrepresented and this should have been updated. It also has a rating of 6.9 which is probably the most accurate score on IMDB and I totally agree with this.

What I like

I like the cast; Courtney Cox, Christa Miller, Busy Phillips, Dan Byrd, Josh Hopkins, Brian Van Holt and my favourite Ian Gomez as well as guest appearances by former Scrubs actors.
It requires absolutely no concentration.
The jokes are silly.
The adults are portrayed as still being juvenile about things, and this is very realistic, who has an on/off switch that clicks their fun, immature, joke side off once they hit adulthood? Not me!
Family and the importance of family is at the core of the show.

What I dont like

This was hard to find something I didn't like, but ordinarily I find it quite annoying that older actresses are playing younger women and to do so have their faces pumped full of gunk or nipped and tucked. But this really doesn't affect my enjoyment of the show.
Too stereotypy?
Courtney Cox character is pretty perfect regardless of all her hang-ups - but then I don't watch this for the real people in that context.

Other 'C' shows

As a youngster I remember Cagney & Lacey, Cosby Show, Charlies Angels & Cheers. I watched Charmed for a while in my teens and over the last ten years have watched and enjoyed...Community, Castle, Cold Case, Chicago Fire, Criminal Minds, and all the CSI's.

However, special mention goes to Columbo for being a great detective show and one of the few that you can watch the same episode repeatedly and not get bored! (oh? Is that just me?) Also, recently the first season of Continuum aired here in the UK and I never watched it but recorded it, I have just started watching it and it isn't bad. It does look as though it has been cancelled already with only 10 episodes in the season. I find it quite frustrating that good shows get cancelled and reality TV rubbish gets renewed. I cordially beg those reality TV viewers in the US to pick ONE reality show and stick to it and to start watching other shows so that they aren't cancelled! Thank you ;)

Do you have a favourite C show? Do you love or hate any of those I have mentioned?

Don't forget to check out my other C post here or previous posts here.

  1. Another show I've never watched (and probably never will...no, I think I can say definitely never-I hate Courtney Cox)! I have seen episodes of Charlie's Angels and The Cosby Show, and I used to have the first five seasons of CSI (the plain one, the first one, or the one without a city after CSI), but I don't have them anymore and haven't seen it past season 5. I think my collection of American shows is barren in the "C" category!

    1. Yes, I agree with that too, I think once they realised how much damage naming it cougar town did to its audience numbers they opted to make fun of it. It is a great show though and well worth watching :D

  3. Ahhh, Columbo. Don't you love how he knows the first time he meets someone that they are the murderer and then spends an entire episode bugging the crap out of them until they admit it?

Criminal Minds is my favorite show by far. Dear Lord, I love Spencer Reid...

...and I'm with my sister on the whole Cougar Town thing. Not diggin' Courtney Cox. Oddly enough, it does sound like something my husband would enjoy, though.

  5. We were big The Closer fans when that was on. Great ensemble cast, but it didn't translate as well to the new spin off, for some reason. Sad, really.
