Them & US: A is for Arrow

Arrow

Ok, so on a whim I was spurred on to write a second entry for the A to Z challenge and I plan to do US TV shows (generally the first that comes to mind when I think of the letter as opposed to my favourite) and give you my Brit view. This series is called Them & US which is TV shows and US and my appalling attempt at a clever pun!

However, lets get it done...the first TV show that came to mind was Arrow.

This is what IMDB says about the show:

Spoilt millionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing-presumed-dead when his yacht is lost at sea. He returns five years later a changed man, determined to clean up the city as a hooded vigilante armed with a bow.

and here is a lovely picture of the leading man who plays Oliver Queen (actor Stephen Amell).

Now, IMDB has given this a rating of 8.2. I would give it a 6.

I never knew of the actor before this show and admittedly he is quite easy on the eye and what I would call a pretty boy...and this combined with some actors I like such as David Ramsey, John Barrowman and Paul Blackthorne can't save it.

What I liked

I liked the actors. in the show and I liked that glamorous sheen that US TV shows have on them. I liked the idea of the story and I thought it had potential to go places.

What I didn't like

I didn't like the story before he returned from the island, I know that may be the comic book story or whatever (if it is even based on a comic book) but for me it was quite dull and silly.

Over time I found the episodes to be lacking in something and my attention easily wandered and the worse thing that can happen whilst watching a TV show was that I was thinking about household chores.

The perfection started to grate on me as it has a tendency to do, I like my characters to act and look real which I know is pie in the sky dreaming here. In the UK TV shows the male actors are usually a bit handsome but still aren't perfect and I find US actors have to be perfect unless they are old and even then they still seem perfect. Even geeks have to fit the 'I'm a perfect geek mold' but I digress...this probably isn't the place to rant about american actresses and to a large extent British actresses too and they aren't entirely to blame.

I have stopped watching it and for some that may have been at the moment it started to get good but I need to be totally endorsed in its fabulousness by episode 4 or else it gets the boot!

Other 'A' shows...

Since Arrow was the first thing that came to mind, I went with it but have since thought I could have gone with...ALF (Childhood obsession, who didn't spend their formative years telling everyone 'I Kill Me'? Who am I kidding, I still do it now!) and Arrested Development (a great show that was caked in irony and wit and dripping with silliness but contained a great cast and just had something good!). I also grew up with the A-Team & Airwolf.

What is the first show that comes to your mind? What is your favourite? Are you an arrowhead? Is that even what they call arrow fans?

  1. OK, how sad is this...I have NEVER heard of this show! Since my own American DVD collection is extremely limited (Once Upon A Time, Wings, ER, South Park, Queer As Folk, The Kids In The Hall, House, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries is pretty much the entire gambit), I'm afraid my assistance will be extremely limited! I do have a few older shows from my youth (sadly, not Alf), but The Hardy Boys, the second incarnation of Dark Shadows (the one with Ben Cross), and...well that's it. I never was a big American TV watcher apparently!

  2. So funny, the blog post I just read was by an American writing about British TV for A-Z. Fun to read two different perspectives.

  3. I am a bit older than you! Alf was on in my early college years, so not much TV then. I seem to remember back in those days I was an avid Nick At Nite fan (a TV channel that only aired old black and white shows like The Munsters, Donna Reed, Car 54, Where Are You?, Ozzie & Harriet, etc). Now they air shows that I watched only a few short years ago! Time flies when you are getting old!

    1. I still gave it six. It's watchable but hasn't maintained my attention. It's good to find a show you really enjoy and I am glad this is for you. :)
