A is for..

Today is April 1st, and over 1000 bloggers have committed themselves to blogging everyday of this month (except Sundays, except today!). There is a theme of the alphabet, and today is the letter A.

My theme is career choices!

I am one of those indecisive people, who never knows what career they want, but who is happy to give anything a try.  I am pretty much a career temp. I just don’t feel ready to commit to any one thing. But there are a lot of careers out there that I would like to try. So, with that in mind, the letter A is for …

OED, Third edition, November 2010; online version March 2012

Why an actor?

As a child, I used to enjoy watching Miss Marple and I aspired to be an interfering busy body when I got that old, spending retirement knitting and eavesdropping as fellow villagers popped their clogs in mysterious circumstances, and with the occasional Caribbean holiday thrown in.  Its some indication of the kind of child I was when this was my dream.

Why I would be good at this job.

Previous acting experience.
Plenty of time to learn how to be the best Miss Marple.
Sociable, so I know quite a few people who I could conveniently visit.
Great short term memory for learning lines.
I can knit.
I can eavesdrop.
My hair is long enough to tie into a bun.
I live near several villages.
I own a cardigan and sensible shoes.

Why I wouldn’t be good at this job.

Unfortunately, that experience I mentioned as a reason I would be good at this job is the only experience I have at acting. I was a teenager when I was in the chorus of a school play where I was a Rat. Normally at this point I might mention my small role as an Irish priest in the Hamlet musical adaptation ‘Mad if you think I am’, but due to the most hideous accent, terrible overacting and my total resentment at being manipulated by the drama teacher - I am going to glaze over it. See! That’s glazing ;) At least I have the Diva ready for when the time comes! Haha.

I might not like acting lessons, and it is a pretty long term commitment.

Is it something I should be looking at starting to learn now? Or give it a few more years? How much competition do you think there will be for 60-70 year old women, and are they likely to still be doing Miss Marple remakes? Should I be setting my sights on playing an intergalactic space gran with vampiric tendencies instead?

  1. You can't beat 'Murdering' Miss Marple! Funny how no one seems to think it's odd that she just happens to be around when all these people mysteriously die or disappear... ;-)

  4. Wonderful theme choice, and you can't beat Miss Marple, especially with the ability to knit as part and parcel of the total package! ;)

  9. Great theme! You should just try and decide what makes you happy in your everyday life and see if you can find something that has something to do with it! I love reading so I'm aiming to be an English literature teacher :)

  10. Hey! I'm visiting you from the A - Z, it's nice to meet you :)

This is such a cool theme for the challenge! I aspire to be an interfering busy body when I reach that age too! It's always useful to own cardigans and live near several villages when you have this sort of an ambition :D

I reckon they will still be making remakes, although I really must urge you to give the intergalactic space gran with vampiric tendencies some serious consideration!

    I'm following you now :)

  13. Hi all, thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog.

Ermie: So very very true! Its always the quiet ones :)

Yvonne: They do, I think Margaret Rutherford is one of my faves though.

Kylie: I wanted to keep it simple, more for myself than anything else. I have a bullet point brain, lol.

K2tog: Hey another knitter - I am still an amateur though, but its a start.

Stuart: I hope you'll stop by again, there are so many careers that I never even thought of...I am stuck on J..ideas?

Heather: Thanks! You are right, whats that saying about trying and failing? Look out for me on the big screen in 40 odd years :)

Jnana: Hahaha! It should - I love numbers, and order and facts and graphs and charts and...i'm so easily persuaded. Maybe if the acting falls through ;)

Loopyloo: I hope you enjoy them and maybe I will have covered a secret ambition of yours.

Beccabooklover: Going to check out your post, my problem is that I am interested in everything until Im not..phew! glad I cleared that up, eh?

Nikki: Its great! I'm not alone, safety in numbers and all that - I need an equally interfering busybody to meet for tea and cake and muse over the evidence with. Re. the vampiric gran - never say never!

    Gossip-Grl: Thanks :)

Carol: It kinda creeps me out to, but you gotta move with the times - I doubt Miss Marple will take that stance though, one doesnt need to change when one is always aware of ones surroundings!

  16. Great theme choice!

I love that knitting makes you able to do the job. :) I could never be an actor, way too much... acting, if that makes any sense. I like being me. :)

    1. haha - makes perfect sense, ive always thought that too. My knitting has improved over the year so there is hope for me yet.

  17. Thanks again :)

Lynn: I'm still only a potential actor...do you think I could learn in 40 years?

    Adrienne: Thanks.

Krista: I always say that I have enough trouble trying to be myself without having to be someone else! Maybe I could work at living my life as Miss Marple and then it wouldnt really be acting :)

  18. You could be a teacher - there's quite a lot of acting required there and plenty of other drama;-)

    1. haha! 10 months later and I'm neither a teacher or acting...ive come so far! lol I am writing drama though so its not a bad compromise. How have you been?
