#VisDare - Goodbye

This weeks Vis Dare...

Anne stood at the edge of the pavement facing the shop window. She watched the people passing by on their way to work. They had somewhere to be. They moved with such urgency and she smiled bitterly to herself as her eyes were drawn to a bustle of school girls moving along like a flock of geese, their high pitched voices trilled in time with their pace.

She looked past them to the display in the department store window; it was blander than she remembered it having ever been, no lights or accessories, just mannequins lined up as if about to march somewhere. Anne stared at them, for a moment frozen in time, they were empty, lifeless and she willed them to move, to wiggle a finger, to blink, to do something, anything that would provide some hope. But they were just shells, cheap imitations of people and yet she couldn’t stop staring.

She felt a familiar touch, a hand tenderly squeezed her arm, “Anne…we need to get back to the hospital, its time to say goodbye. The organ transplant unit is here… you know it’s what she would have wanted, to give life in death.”

  2. Good job. Captures the emptiness and loneliness of the situation very well.

  5. Wow. Powerful punch in a short space. Didn't see the ending coming --- it gives such weight and substance to what comes before. Sobering yet beautiful. Lovely work!!
