After yesterdays overly long post, I have decided to keep this one nice and short.
Why this job.
I am not entirely sure if I would like to do this because I love the violin or because I would love to play any instrument. The Violin is the one I have gone for, of course this isn't because it begins with a 'V'! I do like the sound of the Violin, and I loved that film with Meryl Streep about the Violin teacher (Music of the Heart), and my sister had a few lessons many moons ago, and my great uncles used to play the Violin. Is that reason enough? I'm not sure but I would settle for anything.
Why would I be good at this job?
I really haven't thought this through, have I? I like going to barn dances. I love Treme. I also enjoy the theatre, concerts and romantic walks!! Seriously, I would definitely apply myself when it came to practising. No, seriously.
Why I wouldn't be good at this job?
Erm, a lot of standing up at barn dances, and possible arm ache and what about tennis elbow? Of course! I know why not, I am easily distracted, and would be by the lights, the other musicians, people coughing, moving around, sleeping etc. and my all time favourite excuse (which regular readers may have come to know and love) I don't do nights!. I cant read music and it would take me quite a long time (I should imagine) to learn to play and then to develop to be good enough to be able to find work as a violinist. Maybe its just a pipe dream! lol
Questions? OK, how about "How long do you think it would take an adult beginner to learn to play a musical instrument from scratch?"
I think the younger you are the easier it is as for an adult I suppose it varies all depends how much one wants to learn.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
Thanks - I have learnt something from this A to Z and that is that I will stick to just listening to music! Singing and playing is not for me :D
DeleteOh, Kate. Made me smile again. mmmh maybe with the right motivation an adult can learn. Two years ago, I tried teaching myself to play the keyboard. Bought the books and everything. At least I managed to learn 'Happy Birthday' before giving up and hopping over to the guitar. I didn't learn much there. I'm not sure I'd be a good Violinist either. I'm too restless and get bored very fast. I think I'll stick to listening to David Garrett and other Violinists playing Vivaldi.
ReplyDeleteAt least we are still yearning to learn! Happy Birthday is a very useful tune to learn, you must be the guest of honour at parties?
DeleteLOL...was invited once to play the tune..ended up singing Karaoke on Wii. At least then I had backup..haha
Deletei think as an adult it would not be easy, to say the least--but it could be fun!
ReplyDeleteooh! goody :) I like Fun!
DeleteFor someone not musical incline, I think it would be quite a challenge.
ReplyDeleteOh, I am musically inclined, its just not inclined to me. :)
DeleteI'm more of a pipe and keys kind of girl...the violin actually hits those notes in my head that set Ferg-id in a tizzy! I always wanted to learn to play an instrument, but never did...I would like to think as fast as I type, the piano might be good for me, but I just couldn't imagine doing it now at my age!
ReplyDeleteWHAT?! At your age? You're still a young whipper snapper! You would learn in no time.
Deleteaside from having a good ear or not, it depends how dedicated you are because unless you're a prodigy it's practice practice practice. I love the sound violins make when plucked.
ReplyDeleteYep, music is one of those things that is hard to wing unless you are a natural. I think Violins are pretty adaptable.
DeleteI have no idea. I don't play any musical instruments.
ReplyDeleteSonia Lal @ Story Treasury
lol! Fair enough :)
DeleteForever and a day. Okay, that's the cynic in my. I did try to learn the piano recently. However, I could never find enough time to practice :(

Happy A to Z-ing!
I think it would be a labour of love for life.
DeletePffffff... A while, I think. Probably depends on a) whether the person already plays another instrument, or has musical knowledge of some kind, and b) how badly they want to learn. I do know people who have learned to play an instrument as adults and become quite good (not Carnegie Hall good, but, you know, good). I learned the piano as a child, later took a year of violin lessons, later still some guitar... And have now abandoned all three, haha. A waste? Maybe. But the musical knowledge (I can still read music) is something I do cherish.
ReplyDeleteI am sure it provided you with a great deal of pleasure when you used to play, so definitely not a waste.
DeleteThanks for stopping by :)
thanks for stopping by my a-z and following...am now following you.
ReplyDeleteHi - youre welcome and welcome and thanks!
DeleteA few years back I went to a local concert on the common featuring a local rockband that was really popular. Their opening act was this young kid 13 or 14 who was a young violin virtuoso.
ReplyDeleteHe was truely amazing and the stuff he played ranged from slow and romantic to upbeat and fun. His final song was so beautiful it brought the whole audience to tears. I have no idea how long it would take an adult to learn to play an instrument, but I am willing to bet it takes much longer than teaching a child.

Probably, us adults are stubborn things - always questioning every instruction and thinking we might know better - or maybe thats just me! lol
DeleteLove your humor, Kate! I saw your comment on the homepage. Stopped by to follow and help you push toward a hundred. Good luck :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Teresa, a sense of humour has helped me as I am a walking catastrophe! But its never dull :) I have only 4 days left and as of now 15 more to reach 100 and I am kinda keen to get there - after that, I wont mind. I happen to have some great followers and you should check out their blogs too!
DeleteViolin music can be quite romantic. I think with determination and discipline, an adult beginner in violin won't stay a beginner for long.
ReplyDeleteThank you Cynthia, youre great - its like you never say never or tell me to 'forged aboud id!' (from Mickey Blue Eyes - a guilty pleasure of mine)and I am an eternally romantic, *sigh*.
